Garrett Maho
Hopi

Sikyatki Abstract

9" H x 12.5" D

We were blown away by this impressive Hopi pottery by Garrett Maho. It measures a whopping 9” tall and approximately 12.5” in diameter. Sometimes those dimensions can be deceiving, until you see a photo of Garrett holding the piece and you see just how large a vessel like this really is. That’s one of the things I love about artist photos, they provide so much perspective as well as a connection to the artist who made it.

This piece was entirely traditional made using the coil method and all natural vegetal and mineral pigments. Garrett uses a yucca strand to apply his designs, and they are so very fine. Garrett also adheres to outdoor firing techniques which provide the rich, warm blush you see across the entire surface of this expertly executed piece.

Artist Bio:

This piece is the work of Hopi artist Garrett Maho. Garrett continues in the traditional Hopi firing method, in which he takes great pride.

Garrett incorporates new and innovative designs with traditional techniques. Along with the beautiful fire clouds, which are a result of traditional firing, Garrett also adheres to the original process of applying pigments using mineral base and natural "brushes" such as yucca strips and softened wood fibers.

Garrett's talent precedes him, as he has appeared in shows across the west and has taken several awards for his neo-classical pieces. This particular piece is especially fine. The beautiful blush of the "fire clouds" resonates throughout the piece, and the tones of the mineral based pigments vary in degree.

Garrett's application technique combines further traditional elements with contemporary styles.
