Vernida Polacca, a member
of the Kachina Clan at Hopi/Tewa, is a great-granddaughter of
Nampeyo of Hano and a granddaughter of Fannie Nampeyo. Her father,
Harold Polacca, was a son of Fannie. She is a sister of noted
potters Clinton Polacca and Reva Ami. Vernida is known for her
finely painted traditionally designed Hopi pottery.
Vernida adheres to Hopi traditions
of gathering her own clay, hand coiling, burnishing, and hand
painting her work with natural pigments before firing in an outdoor
sheep dung firing pit.
