Original Pencil: Hyrum Joe

Although Hyrum might be recognized as the son of the internationally known alabaster sculptor and bronze artist, Oreland Joe, he has certainly proved that he can stand on his own two feet. Hyrum creates some of the most visually compelling and original works of art in oil that we've seen by anyone his age. Last year he won the SWAIA fellowship and subsequently sold out at his very first Indian Market event.

We are delighted to have this opportunity to show Hyrum's work, which can be seen in only a handful of the most prestigious galleries in Colorado and New Mexico. Because of our close, personal relationship, we were lucky enough to acquire these recent originals, and we look forward to bringing you more.

In another departure from Hyrum's typical medium, as well as subject matter, he presents a colorful depiction of his Plateau heritage through this regal Pow Wow dancer. The beauty of this piece, titled Headman of the Council, is that he could just as easily be the head of the old buffalo council as he could the head of the pow wow council. The imagery, once again, crosses over and illustrates the connection of the old and the new. The only tip off being the vibrant colors used in his regalia, which suggest a modern setting, but the feeling is the same and is conveyed across time. He is focused and determined. He holds a great respect for his tradition and its purpose. There is meaning in everything he does.
