Venora Silas was born in 1967
and has been making pottery since 1977. She was taught by her
mother Roberta Silas. She gathers all of her materials from the
Reservation, uses natural pigments for her paints and fires her
pottery outdoors.
She is a member of the Parrot
& Kachina Clans. She is the sister of Antoinette Silas and
has 5 other sisters that are also potters. Her Uncle Tino Youvella
is an accomplished Kachina Carver and her brother Darrin Silas
is a master silversmith.
She says that her favorite
part of her art is moulding, polishing and painting. She is listed
in several books.
"I have been making pottery
for about 15 years, I have learned everything from my mother.
I use to watch and help her, until I got brave to try my own.
"I have learned since,
now I do my own, plus I also help my friend do Nampeyo type of
pottery. So now I am learning two different styles of pottery.
Everything on my pottery is naturally made and it comes from
mother earth. I enjoy working with mud and plan to keep on making
more."
